In 2003, Subaru became the first manufacturer in United States automotive history to achieve zero-landfill status, where all production-generated waste was either recycled or repurposed to create energy. Because of this achievement, the National Park Service asked Subaru to sponsor its centennial, and a collaboration began between the two companies to make national parks zero landfill. Carmichael Lynch directed a two-minute film, “Who We Are is What We Leave Behind,” featuring footage of national parks such as Yosemite, Grand Teton and Denali, with narration explaining the partnership’s purpose.
