A year after designing a book to commemorate superkül’s tenth year in business, blok design, a Toronto, Ontario–based design firm, once again collaborated with superkül—but this time, to craft the Canadian architecture firm’s new brand identity. As with the book, blok began its work by strategically mining superkül’s background. In the process, it unearthed a key phrase that unlocked the tone of the firm’s work: quiet gravitas. By marrying this with the other qualities defining the firm’s practice—enduring value, materiality and finding the essence of a building—blok balanced the subtlety and spatial richness found in the firm’s work in an exchange between process, color and materiality. From business stationery to the firm’s new website, within the design can be found a series of deliberate unoccupied spaces which reflect the fact that architecture is as much about the spaces in between as the built form.
