Affluent children hear 30 million more words by the age of three than children from low-income homes. This has a huge impact on the development of their brains and long-term implications for their success in school and beyond. Instead of just another PSA campaign, Goodby Silverstein & Partners came up with an innovative solution: a clothing line—free to low income families—and an outdoor campaign that prompts parents to talk, read and sing to their kids. The campaign, developed for the Bay Area Council, highlights how everyday actions from birth—such as describing objects seen during a bus ride, singing songs, reading aloud or telling stories—can significantly improve babies’ ability to build vocabulary and boost their brain development. The onesies, blankets and other materials are distributed free of charge at hospitals, pediatric clinics, family playgroups and childcare programs. Parents who want to purchase the items can do so at talkreadsing.org, and their web purchases help fund the free distributions for low-income families.
