Background: Tecate, a beer born in 1944 and once a symbol of Mexican pride, had lost its edge as culture and competition moved on. Its masculine roots—once a strength—became a constraint. Our mission was clear: reignite the brand’s fire, reclaim relevance and amplify the original spirit that made Tecate iconic for a new generation of beer drinkers.
Design thinking: We anchored our solution in a powerful truth—Mexico works harder than anyone. Tecate has always rewarded that spirit. So we resurrected the ingot—a small yet commanding symbol of worth and endurance—as the ultimate badge of character and pride. Blending heritage with a fresh vision, it became the cornerstone of Tecate’s modern identity.
Challenges: Mexico isn’t one-size-fits-all. The country has drastically different consumer bases in its northern, southern and western regions. Our challenge was to evolve Tecate’s iconic brand with nuance, respecting its roots while creating a design system that flexes across diverse cultural contexts without losing recognition or distinctiveness.
Favorite details: Bringing gold back into Tecate’s palette restored its soul. Relaunching the ingot transformed a historic mark into a bold brand beacon—alive across every touchpoint. We’re proud of weaving “the ultimate reward” into a visual world validated by research and celebrated through the trust of our Heineken partners. By restoring pride back into the eagle, we gave it a real focus and purpose within the broader brand ecosystem.
Time constraints: Our partners gave us the gift of time—to go deeper, explore and validate through insight. By prioritizing the right solution over the fastest, we created a design system that feels authentic, culturally connected and built to solve real business challenges, ensuring Tecate earns its relevance for years to come.
Visual influences: We drew from Tecate’s archive to identify and refine enduring brand assets for a more modern expression. Simplification let the eagle, typography and bold red take focus. Seeing Tecate on every street corner and bodega revealed its deep connection to hardworking Mexicans, which, along with cultural immersion, ensured an authentic and relevant visual identity.
