Regarded for decades as a Surry Hills, New South Wales, Australia, institution synonymous with good times, The Dolphin Hotel now features three distinct spaces: the Dining Room, the Wine Room and a public bar. Owner Maurice Terzini and his team built on the iconic venue’s heritage to add an exciting layer to its history, transforming the space with a modern perspective. The hotel’s visual identity needed to represent this new, contemporary atmosphere and communicate the high quality of the food and beverages now on offer.

Inspired by the work of artists Lawrence Weiner and Keith Haring, the Sydney-based design firm M35 combined black-and-white illustrations with dynamic typography evoking a jumping dolphin. The playful typographic approach was offset by the use of refined serif typography, a contrast which captures the hotel’s essence: fun, but with an eye on quality. M35 also used the illustrations throughout the hotel’s interior and wrapped the menus in twine to mimick the wrapped objects and walls inside the hotel, themselves inspired by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Reinvigorated, fun and artful, today’s Dolphin Hotel promises a seamless integration between space and brand.
