Retired fireboat goes on display. Commissioned by the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this exhibition occupies 3,500 square feet and chronicles Hong Kong’s fireboat history since 1883. Designed by Hong Kong design firm Marc & Chantal Design, the brief included some unusual factors: the enormous physical presence of the fireboat, a semi-outdoor environment and the need to appeal to an audience that includes children and adults.
Like stage sets, layered information makes the most of the impressive display. The gallery is carved out of the adjacent garden and set at sea level with colors and materials that recreate a maritime atmosphere: circular skylights send water-tinged shadows streaming in from the pond above while curved glass walls make all-weather viewing possible. Four iconic images (the Hong Kong skyline, the firemen's helmets, tools and boat design) serve as the central motif that evolves over time to create a narrative for the exhibition timeline.
