Background: Partnering with the New York Public Library, the purpose of Insta Novels is to introduce some of the most iconic stories of classic literature to a new digitally obsessed audience on Instagram. Insta Novels was launched on the library’s Instagram account (@nypl) with a digitized version of part one of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, illustrated by Magoz. Over the next few months, a digitized version of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, illustrated by Buck Design, and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, illustrated by César Pelizer, will also be released on the library’s Instagram page.
Reasoning: It’s always interesting to think of how a company should behave on a social media platform. And also to provide some kind of utility to people who love to read books. Instagram really is a wonderful platform to do what the New York Public Library does best: encourage the love of books.
Challenges: The most challenging aspect was just like any other tedious aspect of technology: uploading 99 individual pages to your Instagram Story.
Favorite details: Definitely the placeholder, which ultimately turned into a solution. It was a fun detail that made reading the book on the app more interesting.
Visual influences: Book cover designs. Designing the cover of a novel for Instagram gave us a new outlet for our pre-existing love of books, one where we were not constrained by the tradition of the art. It completely opened up new possibilities for us.
