The process to create the music video for the song “Half a Million” was a long one. It started with directing duo LAMAR+NIK, otherwise known as Jesse Lamar High and Nik Harper, filming the Shins against a white backdrop. They then edited the footage before printing all the frames—4,868 in total—onto sticker paper. After cutting out 5,566 stickers, LAMAR+NIK numbered and separated the stickers by scene. It took more than 40 locations, some boasting sweltering summer heat, to finish filming the stickers being layered in sequence. All this to say: there are no shortcuts to grand visual illusions.
