When BBDO Paris was tasked with creating ads to celebrate the release of the dance video game Just Dance 2017, the ad agency quickly realized that the thing it enjoyed most about playing the game was not mastering the moves, but laughing at each other and seeing people’s crazy sides. People let go when they dance. You get to see their other sides. This is the true benefit of games like Just Dance. To convey this, the agency wanted to use a situation that anyone can relate to: that moment when you see a friend or relative dance in an unexpected way and go, “Whoa! Where did you come from?!”
This even happend during filming. Gustavo, who played the father Bill in one of the spots, was a rockstar. He barely spoke, but put all his effort and emotion into his dancing. He was filmed in a large casino about an hour from Barcelona with a ballroom full of extras, and by the end of the day, they were asking for his autograph and shaking his hand. The DJ put some Funkagenda on the sound system, and the extras actually carried Gustavo around the room on their shoulders. BBDO Paris purposely did not get professional dancers for the shoot, but Gustavo was born to groove.
Since their release, the ads have been getting a lot of positive feedback on blogs and websites. BBDO Paris’s excited and enthusiastic client Ubisoft, along with many others, have dropped by to say they really enjoyed the ads. After all, who can resist the joy of dance?
