Background: For the sixth year in a row, Mucho has teamed up with UC Investments to design its annual report for 2020. UC Investments is the investment branch of the University of California, and has helped to support the university system through many different economic and global moments. UC Investments has the experience to navigate uncertain times, and we designed the UC Annual Report 2020 to share its insights with the community.
Reasoning: Given how everything was online last year, we wanted an annual report design that would have more of an impact when people received it through the mail. Working with Primary Color Printers, we took a more-editorial format for what felt like a very “newsworthy” year. It was an interesting way to make the report relevant.
Challenges: We wanted to dramatize the year by designing the report entirely in black-and-white. This stripped-back approach left little room for the design to hide, which pushed us with the layout, type and photography.
Favorite details: We really pushed the use of type in the report, using a lot of alternative glyphs within the font and even redrawing some letters. We love the ampersands.
Specific demands: As with any annual report, we have to be careful and ensure that we represent the numbers accurately. There was a lot of triple checking.
Anything new: That’s what is so great about our relationship with UC Investments. Because we’ve been designing the annual report every year, we get to think of something different, fresh and relevant each year.
