Documentary View From A Blue Moon captures professional surfer John Florence and his friends as they travel the globe to expand the boundaries of surfing, and to push their physical limits. An intense three-year project, design firm Wedge & Lever created and designed a companion book to the film that provides in-depth documentation of the project. “Nearly 50,000 images were cataloged,” says Wedge & Lever’s project manager Thomas Pearson, “ranging from family photos to RED framegrabs shot from helicopters over desolate stretches of African coastline.” The book’s sophisticated design extends the dark aesthetics of the film, and offers written copy crafted by the firm, photographer C.R. Stecyk, III and the sports company Hurley—Florence’s professional sponsors—featuring candid interviews and long-form essays on the film. Each chapter of the book mirrors the structure of the film, divided by timecodes of hours, minutes, seconds and frames.
