Her images evoke a rebellious 1970s Easy Rider road trip through rural America, but 28-year-old photographer Amanda Leigh Smith is unmistakably millennial, a member of “Generation Nice.”
“Clients say my shoots are the least stressful they’ve done,” says Smith, who keeps it simple on the job, shooting film with a standard 35mm SLR. Not one for digital pre-shoots or post-process work, Smith says, “I trust my eye and my gut, and focus more on the experience than the technical.”
Originally from Cypress, Texas, Smith now splits her time between Portland, Oregon, and her new husband’s hometown of Whistler, British Columbia, shooting nostalgic magazine editorials and campaigns for fashion, outdoors and lifestyle brands. No strangers to the open road, the couple journeyed 10,000 miles on a custom-built motorcycle across South America last year, and they’re currently constructing a “rolling home” for themselves atop a 1953 flatbed truck, to continue their adventures. Smith’s motto comes courtesy of Thoreau: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.”
