Often icy and jewel-toned, Anastasiia Sapon’s photographs each tell a story that might send a shiver down your spine. The Ukrainian-born photographer moved to the United States for an internship at a Reno, Nevada, hotel, where she began snapping pictures of her flashy surroundings. A Ukrainian friend in San Francisco saw her work and urged her to go to art school, which is how the former hospitality major graduated with a BFA in photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. “And now it’s my dream job,” she says.

I would say my photography is romantic because I look for moments that make my heart skip.

Currently on an O-1 visa (for individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement), Sapon attracts clients through her highly narrative and poignant portraits. “I would say my photography is romantic because I look for moments that make my heart skip—that moment when a photographer knows he got the shot and it’s special.” With a recent work trip to Alaska and commissions from Instacart, Fast Company and the University of California, Santa Cruz, Sapon is well on her way. But she’s not content to sit sill. “I’m always excited for the next best picture.”
