Duration: Blue Moon, a communications consultancy, was formed in 1989. Its design department was formed six years ago when Bradley Kirshenbaum joined the company to make design an integral part of the solutions that Blue Moon offered.
Staff: The design department is made up of 7 of Blue Moon's 30 staff members.
Education: Bradley Kirshenbaum, bachelor of design with honors from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Craig Belnick, Eric Tladi and Walindah Seema have national diplomas in design from the Greenside Design Centre, the Vaal Triangle Technikon and the Vega School of Advertising, respectively.
Cultural Influences: Blue Moon's multicultural make-up—like that of the broader South African society—makes the design team unpredictable and vibrant. Also inspiring is the shifting face of South Africa, the hidden Johannesburg landscape, homegrown music and fashion and SA youth culture. The annual Design Indaba in Cape Town is a yearly pilgrimage.
Environment: Design needs to be created in a broader context. As part of a bigger company, the design team interacts with Blue Moon's mediums of theater, video, music and live events. Freelancers are integral to Blue Moon's ethos—the offices are always filled with designers, directors, actors and local celebrities.
Philosophy: We worry a lot. We fret over whether our designs look balanced and whether they really reflect what we're trying to convey. We agonize over lines shifting mere millimeters and lose sleep over percentages of cyan. Whilst this isn't very good for our health, it's really awesome for our clients. No worries.
