Duration: Since 2005.
Education: BA in graphic design.
Staff: Just me, though last year, I set up a studio space for illustrators in London called OPEN. The two main objectives of OPEN are education and entrepreneurship within an illustration and design discipline. I aim to forge new educational links with other studios and schools, running workshops and writing and responding to briefs as part of my work.
Cultural Influences: My work is concerned with the construction of shapes and spaces, playing upon chance and a series of controlled experiments which draw on a specific theme, brought together to tell a story.
Environment: Day trips to Dungeness Nuclear Power station in Kent; the islands off Gothenburg that go dark at lunchtime over Christmas where everyone drives motorized wheelbarrows; and driving for hours through the Mojave desert eating rotting plums... all the places I visit have a huge impact on my work. Whether I draw, write or photograph, I would never want to work in one place alone. I have been working from bases in London, Berlin and all over the world, although my home is at OPEN.
Philosophy: Life is short, the art long.
For Minneapolis-based designer Timothy Embretson, his world revolves around the core of design.
