Duration: About six years.
Staff: Me and three rotating assistants.
Education: Bachelor of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Cultural Influences: My stepfather Flip Schulke, who introduced me to photography and has been a huge influence and inspiration in my life. Some other influences would be Jeff Wall, Helmut Newton, Ron Mueck, Edward Hopper, Chris Buck, Nick Knight, David Lynch, Spike Jonze, Miranda July, Wilco, Neutral Milk Hotel, JT LeRoy, Jonathan Letham and Michel Houellebecq. Probably my biggest influences are my friends, especially Anthony Acosta, Kreg Holt, Amanda Friedman, Joshua Deaner and Brook Adams.
Environment: My favorite thing about this job is the opportunity to check out and experience new things. I’ve been to the fake Mars at NASA, I’ve been in the middle of a dog transplant surgery, I’ve been in center field at Dodger Stadium, I’ve been in Snoop Dogg’s backyard...and I can’t wait to see where I get to go next. When I’m not at one of these exotic locations, you can usually find me at my computer with my dog Capone next to me, begging me to throw his favorite rope.
Philosophy: My main philosophy, when it comes to my photography, is to always try to stay fresh and new. I’m always looking for different ways to see things. I never want to get pigeonholed into one type of genre. At this point, I’m mainly known for my portraits, but I would love to do some fashion stories, work on some landscapes or anything else that might come my way.
The view is incredible from the razor edge, where Minneapolis illustrator Jason Greenberg works.
