Cultural Influences: The Southwest desert landscape; the art, history and future of the American Indian; The Badlands; Canton, TX; baseball; vintage advertising, windmills, farms, architecture; coffee; classic Toyota Land Cruisers; The Jayhawks; Blue Mountain; Vic Chesnutt; Gillian Welch; Stevie Ray Vaughn; Neil Young; Bjork; Cormac McCarthy; Terrence Malick; Shane; Jim Jarmusch; Free Speech TV; NPR; Dwell mag; airos.org; and brother buffalo, of course.
Environment: My studio is a freestanding, self-contained, brick building (www.hickorystreetannex.com) with huge windows on all four sides. It was originally built during the 1930s by the Gulf Oil Corp. and was remodeled by the OneFastBuffalo herd in 2003. It has all the "essentials": conference room, lounge, kitchen, workspace, patio, dog kennel and batting cage.
Philosophy: I usually find I am at my best when I stop talking about an upcoming job and just give it a shot by delving into the project. Research is an ongoing process. Get inspired, keep your eyes open and retain what you see. Capture and store creative ideas when they hit you. Explore chaotic design impulses...don't discount those ideas...They usually result in the most innovative solutions. Don't worry about how it's "supposed" to be done or how it has been done in the past. Create a solution, and enjoy doing it...or else give the money back to the client. In the end, don't do anything to make the world less beautiful. Try to keep in shape. Run, stretch and eat buffalo meat (consists of only about 3% fat and tastes great). Oh, and to borrow a quote from my dad—"If anything is worth doing, it's worth doing right."
