Overflowing with declarative colors and typography, the graphic design of Rennes-based studio Retour Chariot erupts off of banners, booklets and T-shirts. “We’re used to working with bold typography made by women and minority type designers; illustrations; and graphic elements, such as pictograms, color blocks and grids—always with the idea that our visual identity will stand out,” say Solène Brochard, Oriane Charvieux and Justine Herbel, the trio that makes up Retour Chariot. “We also like to use different textures to enhance the depth and graphic plasticity of our creations—for example, with Risograph printing.” Brochard, Charvieux and Herbel met during their studies in graphic design at art-focused high schools, such as Lyon-based La Martinière Diderot and Rennes-based Lycée Brequigny, and then public universities such as the Lorient- and Rennes-based École Européenne Supérieure d’Art de Bretagne and the Gif-sur-Yvette, France–based École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay. “We are three independent graphic designers, but we work together on the same projects,” explain the trio on their design firm’s structure. “We established the studio without having much experiences at other companies beyond some internships at Any Studio in Berlin, Powster in London and Surface Studio in Lille, France.” Together, they are driven by their passion for creating impactful graphics while also heightening awareness of issues. “We like to work on projects that make sense to us, with people who share our vision of the world,” Brochard, Charvieux and Herbel explain. “Some topics we like to explore in our work are feminism, local and seasonal food, or developing community activities in a neighborhood.”
