Location: San Francisco, CA
Duration: 1.5 years on my own.
Size: In the studio it’s just me. On a shoot, I have the privilege of working with the most amazing people. I am always in awe of the talent in this business.
Education: I have attended universities in Rhode Island, Switzerland, New Zealand and Paris. I have a BA, but honestly most of what I have learned has been through life experiences.
Cultural Influences: Photography, painting, sculpture, architecture, performance art, theater, dance, opera, literature, music, film: there is a creative voice in everything. I am inspired by anyone who can express their ideas and what they see in a unique way. I love it when I can look at a Lillian Bassman photograph or a Matthew Barney installation and think, “How the hell did they come up with that?”
Environment: I get to shoot in the most incredible locations, but when I have to be in my office, it is four bare walls, a couple of computers and no chairs. I am more comfortable outside than in.
Philosophy: Photography is my way of communicating what I see. I don't want to just capture images, I want to create images that empower and give voice to the subject, that engage and inspire the viewer.
At the intersection of art and design, Eric Skillman hopes to communicate both his and their ideas.
