No two projects from London- and Manchester-based design firm Salt and Sister Studio feel quite alike, whether sisters Halah and Heidi El-Kholy have opted for robust geometric patterns in posters for artist Hetain Patel or subtle fluidity in the flyers for a show by arts initiative A.Mal. And that’s exactly the point, as through their studio, the duo brings their clients’ truest essence out through visual design. “The idea of Salt and Sister Studio is that we work collaboratively with our clients, giving them the space to share their story and journey up until this point of branding—or rebranding,” the sisters say. “There’s a lot of talking, sharing visual loves and hates, and an intensive tone-of-voice workshop—all so that we’re at a point where we can confidently come up with a contextualized brand identity that looks and sounds authentic.” Having opened their studio in 2021, Halah and Heidi explore their aesthetic influences from ’60s and ’70s psychedelia, especially Cairo cinema posters, as well as their interest in social activism. The two have committed to using their business to empower people from marginalized populations and carefully select clients based on their values. “Our main driving force behind launching Salt and Sister Studio is sheer disillusionment with ‘the workplace,’ unpacking problematic and toxic office culture like casual racism and microaggressions, sexual harassment, and mental health oppression,” Halah and Heidi say. “As people of the global majority growing up in a very White seaside town, we know the damage caused by assimilation and the gradual erosion of cultural identity. We love a leveled playing field, and this is a main focus for us and our work.”
