For Ze Feng, a Pasadena-based designer who counts branding, typography, art direction and creative coding among his skills, visual design emerges organically from the frameworks in which he has rooted his practice. “I approach projects by building structure and workflow first,” he explains. “Whether it’s a brand identity or campaign, I focus on the hierarchy, typography and logic of the project before its surface expression. That process comes from years of working on projects that need to live across many formats, teams and markets.” Feng’s entryway into a design career came from years of avidly drawing, painting and studying art history, honing his aesthetic instincts. While studying graphic design at the ArtCenter College of Design, he discovered he could marry those instincts with design’s hierarchical principles to make work that felt just as conceptual as fine art. “Since [graduating], I’ve worked across studios and agencies in both the United States and China, which exposed me to very different creative rhythms and expectations,” Feng says. “That cross-context experience shaped how I work today. I’m less interested in style for its own sake and more interested in how design functions inside culture, business and human behavior.” This psychological approach to design has instilled the importance of responsibility in his practice. “Design shapes how people perceive, trust and decide—often without them realizing it,” he says. “Because of that, I try to work with a strong sense of context. I want to build work that holds up visually and structurally over time.”
