Tegaki is a Japanese typeface modeled on the American Spencerian Script styles that evolved during the early nineteenth century. Replacing the dipped brush with the dipped-ink steel nib, early development of the typeface yielded a common system of movements, stresses and modulations that proved that a Japanese Spencerian would be possible. The naturally beautiful Japanese letterforms took on a new life for me, allowing personal expression and improvisation, with OpenType providing the necessary platform for ligatures, extremes in movement and baseline liberties. Tegaki won a Type Directors Club TDC2 Certificate of Typographic Excellence as well as second prize in the People’s Choice category in the 2012 Morisawa Type Design Competition.
