“Held at Firstsite in Colchester, the exhibition Nigel Henderson and Eduardo Paolozzi: Hammer Prints Ltd 1954–75 explored the history and legacy of Hammer Prints Ltd., a venture established by artists Eduardo Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson in 1954 as a vehicle for their self-declared ‘attack on the craft field.’ The partnership created a series of designs, which were applied to textiles, wallpapers, ceramics and housewares. We reproduced the patterns, gleaned from artwork acetates and archival materials, and restored them in their original colors and scale for the exhibition. Firstsite’s expansive walls provided a blank canvas that we swathed in Hammer Prints Ltd.’s wallpapers. We covered the main hall in a series of graphic cutouts from the artists’ Sea Beasts series, which echoed their experiments with magnification and enlargements and drew visitors through the building to the galleries.”
