“For Car and Driver magazine’s ‘Lightning Lap’ article, an annual feature on performance cars’ race times on the Virginia International Raceway. I was inspired by the drawings of ghosts, monsters and spirits done by some Japanese artists, including Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and I had to combine many figures into a composition that felt right. It’s hard to describe what ‘right’ means. Usually, I trust my instinct and know when I should stop or when I need to add more characters or other visual elements.”
