“The main title sequence for Animal Kingdom was our second project with John Wells Productions, following Shameless. Wells is known for creating edgy series with incredibly complex characters, and Animal Kingdom is no different. It’s about a family steeped in a life of crime. Ellen Barkin plays the matriarch, Smurf, who runs the show by emotionally manipulating her sons. It’s dark and twisted—a modern-day view of Oedipal behavior. This is what fueled our main title explorations. Our piece focuses on the back tattoo Smurf has of her sons’ names. Macro, high-speed photography of the tattooing process draws you in as flashes of imagery weave the piece together. The entire piece is treated to look a bit weathered.”
