“Situated at the center of San Francisco’s Mission District, Charles Phan’s restaurant Wo Hing General Store was named for a small grocery store that Phan’s uncle and father owned in Vietnam after fleeing from China in the 1960s. For the restaurant, we created a rich, colorful visual language that plays with the delicate nature of noodles. Our designers experimented with raw and cooked noodles and used a scanner to create flowing, abstract images reminiscent of cyanotype photograms. After noticing a similarity to the structure of tubular neon signs often associated with Chinese street food, we also designed a lightweight transparent window sign, which we screen-printed with electroluminescent ink.”
