Six stamps were issued by Royal Mail to mark the 250th anniversary of the Royal Society of Arts, an organization dedicated to the improvement of society, achieved through a varied program of training, projects and events. Designer Derek Birdsall (himself an RSA Royal designer for Industry) has captured some of the many activities, awards and achievements of the RSA and its fellows, including the invention of the world's first ever postage stamp—The Penny Black.
