“The Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) wanted to change the public’s sympathetic but often biased perception of the visually impaired. Our insight was simple: if you cannot see, you hear much better and that makes you a better listener. We sought to assemble a special group of blind volunteers to be trained as phone counselors. Their goal was to help able-bodied but needy members of the public, who were initially unaware that they were being counseled by someone with a devastating disability. For the blind, our campaign turned their handicap into an asset.”
