“Every year Applied Arts magazine commissions a design studio to art direct a special issue, in our case it was the Design Annual. Our chosen theme honors the unsung heroes of our industry, those who often go without acknowledgment when the awards are handed out: printers, production artists, interns, project managers, accountants and, lastly, the typographic hyphen. Our Twitter feed filled as creatives responded to our call to nominate their unsung heroes, which were then included in the gutter of the magazine. The cover became an infographic using winner’s names in a typographical hierarchy based on award nominations.”
