“The study of urban wildlife is now considered a frontier of science. The Nature Lab at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles—a 6,500-square-foot hands-on gallery with live animals, science demonstrations and more than 200 specimens on display—invites visitors of all ages to gain a deeper understanding of the richness of urban nature in one of the biggest cities in the world. Working with museum staff, Gallagher & Associates and KBDA developed a unique approach to the interpretation of urban ecosystems. The resulting experience offers a detailed look into the lifestyles, adaptations and challenges facing urban wildlife. It is coupled with an outdoor nature area where visitors explore living environments and collect specimens. The design feels modern, has elements that emulate a laboratory, and is hands-on and fun. Customizable social media inspire children and adults to participate in Citizen Science, an ongoing research initiative documenting living specimens using networked cameras.”
