Nepal has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Each year, more than 6,000 women die during childbirth. Most of them give birth at home without the help of a trained attendant. For this young mother, a skilled birth attendant makes a life-saving difference. Created for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's 'Living Proof Project,' the images were used on the foundation's Web site and within a worldwide presentation by Bill Gates on the state of global health.
