A harp seal pup seeks shelter from the relentless winds that scour the sea ice covering the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Born on the sea ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in February, harp seal pups wait for their mothers to return to nurse them before she abandons them to mate. Life on the ice is harsh, and mortality is high. Years with warmer than normal temperatures lead to weak ice and extreme pup mortality. Used for stock photography licensing.
