When McSweeney's approached me to design the cover for Dave Eggers's new book A Hologram for the King, they had a few things in mind already: They knew that they wanted the cover to be tactile—that the book would be a beautiful object that felt good to hold— and the lettering/typography would be the most dominant element. The main goal in designing the cover was to do something that very subtly referenced the story through the patterns debossed into the material, and to create a typographical treatment that felt contemporary and appropriate for the story.
