Rose's concept for the WWF miniature sheet was inspired by French Post-Impressionist painter Henri Rousseau. The multi-layered tableau was created as a stunning 36 1/8 x 27 1/4 paper collage; the challenge was to hold the detail and intensity when reduced down to 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 for the stamp issue. The composition highlights the diversity and interdependence of the Amazonian rainforest, while bringing to life the flora and fauna of this spectacular region. The sheet works as a coherent scene, with perforations around individual animals—spider monkey, hyacinth macaw, poison dart frog and jaguar—creating four separate stamps.
