“This special Olympics-themed issue for the New York Times Magazine aimed placed the 2016 Summer Olympics in both a contemporary and historical context. The articles ranged from profiles on current athletes competing in the games to the writer’s most memorable moments to a photo essay by Erik Madigan Heck, which paired contemporary Olympians in portraits with past Olympians who inspire them. The goal was to visually hint at the rich history of the games by commissioning art imbued with historical meaning. Notably, we asked Lance Wyman, designer of the identity for the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico to create iconography for the sidebars throughout the issue.”
