“We were approached by the client, a successful candlemaker, to help concept and create a retail experience with candles at the center. The Candlefish experience evolved to include candle-making workshops, as well as a fragrance library where customers can smell up to 100 scents and build a fragrance profile. We named the brand after candlefish. Also known as eulachon, this type of fish contains enough oil to burn like a candle when dried; as early as the first century A.D., indigenous people in the Pacific Northwest used candlefish to light their dwellings. We also consulted on the interior design of the retail store and designed the brand identity, packaging, illustration systems and various branded pieces for use online. The Candlefish product line was designed to be classic and neutral to help distinguish it as a house brand. A lot of fish, water and fire imagery came into play.”
