“The goal was to create a stamp to celebrate the 2017 total solar eclipse. The designer combined existing photographs of an eclipse and the moon with a printing process using temperature-sensitive ink. Placing a finger over the black disc on the stamp causes the ink to change from black to clear to reveal the moon, the object causing the eclipse. The reverse side of the pane shows the path of the eclipse and times it appears in various locations. The first US stamp of its kind, it proved popular across the spectrum, from school-aged children to veteran scientists.”
