“IBM was launching a new server called the IBM POWER9, and they flew me to Austin in 2017 to shoot the server and its components. Ryan Mellody, the creative director on this project, had the idea to shoot the server blown apart to showcase its featured components. Working with a local prop stylist in Austin named Adam Fortner, we built layers of glass shelves and put each component on its own layer to get the perfect perspective. Then we shot each layer, from the top to the bottom. The smaller components, such as screws and wires, were hung with string. My retoucher, Taisya Kuzmenko, masked out each layer and added shadows; but other than that, everything lined up perfectly. Seeing the final setup—all these computer parts on a precarious tower of glass—was pretty interesting. Thankfully, it didn’t collapse.”
