Stranger Things is Netflix’s love letter to all things 1980s. The sci-fi thriller is set in the mythical town of Hawkins, Indiana, where Hawkins National Laboratory serves as a CIA site for human experimentation. In season two, the nefarious laboratory sought to overhaul its image; we created a long-overdue ‘corporate transparency’ campaign to help. The unbranded, direct-response campaign began with cryptic out-of-home placements inspired by ’80s art direction and typography. Billboards and subway posters prompted people to call a toll-free number. Curious dialers were transported into an audio experience full of surprises, beginning with a warm greeting from Dr. Sam Owens (played by Paul Reiser), followed by a choose-your-own-adventure phone tree. Callers bold enough to leave their contact information were rewarded with a surprise mail package full of exclusive swag.”
