“Dores André is a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet and a friend. I had been wanting to photograph her for the right project. When Vogue Ukraine reached out with a commission, it felt like serendipity. I chose two locations for the shoot: an ornate theater similar to where Dores performs, and a quiet, pared-down dance studio similar to where she trains. I liked the juxtaposition. The crew was incredibly talented and made magic happen. Dores is an artist and an athlete, so watching her contort her body was incredible. After the images came out, we got some backlash from the ballet community. The images were too provocative for some. When I look at the images, I see athleticism and talent, but unfortunately, some viewers couldn’t look past Dores’s toplessness. Dores is a risk-taker in her art, so to me, it perfectly embodies her personality.”
