“Can design carry a conversation beyond the walls of a lecture hall? Can it create richer context for the event itself? Can it spark new dialogue and debate? These were some of the questions we discussed with the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) for The Necessity of Tomorrow(s), a high-profile BMA lecture series on art, race and social justice, featuring prominent Black artists like Mark Bradford, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Boots Riley. Language and ideas form the centerpiece of the unconventional promo campaign, which has placed radical and whimsical visions of the future on billboards, bus shelters and posters around Baltimore. Most unusual of all, a series of ‘interrupted’ designs disrupt vernacular signage with provocative messages. ‘No Loitering’ notices, ‘We Buy Houses’ bandit signs and takeout menus have all been interrupted with optimistic messages of ‘Tomorrow... ,’ asking viewers to turn a more critical eye on these unhealthy systems.”
