“To fit the dark, dystopian feeling of their new album, 7, Beach House asked us to create a design that conveys the record’s unsettling, sci-fi-tinged themes. Band members Victoria and Alex provided direction on the mood and inspiration for the record, which we interpreted with a punk-style collage. During three paranoid weeks in the darkest part of winter, we collected found imagery, scanned ripped paper and manually blurred typography. For a design that appears so effortlessly chaotic, our process was very exact and systematic. The cinematic cover’s fragmented female portrait is disrupted with slashes of iridescent foil, which appears at and gray under certain lighting, but then explodes in a rainbow of shifting colors, a hint of the future ashing through. We wanted the physical album to be a special object that fans have on their shelves. After all, you can’t foil stamp Spotify.”
