I had visited Sierra Leone for National Geographic in the early 1990s during the civil war in that country and returned in 2012 to photograph community programs for a religious nonprofit group. One program involved bringing clean water to communities and creating gravity wells inside the communities, making it safer for women to haul water after dark. To show this new development, I waited until twilight, then asked the program person with me to hold a small strobe, highlighting the women as they left the well to head back home in the dark.
