“For the 2018 iteration of Major de La Mercè, a citywide festival in Barcelona celebrating the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy (the city’s patron saint), the Barcelona City Council commissioned me to create visuals for a promotional campaign, including the main poster and nineteen complimentary posters for the festival’s different locations and themes. The campaign had to convey a popular celebration, feminine empowerment, diversity, optimism, openness and solidarity—all values important to Barcelona. I asked myself: ‘Who is Mercè?’ There wasn’t just one Mercè; there were many. Mercè wears a mantle with colored stripes, reminding us of a circus tent—a metaphor for joy. Under her mantle, she shelters more Mercès. They are as diverse as the people of Barcelona. Barcelona is my city, so it was a huge honor to do this campaign.”
