“The basis for Smithee was found in an old French foundry’s wood type specimen in the archives of the Musée de l’imprimerie et de la communication graphique in Lyon. Although there was no mention of the foundry’s name to be found, the variety of available styles all fell under the rather utilitarian, generic designation ‘Série A.’ The mechanical and rather straightforward shapes in the b, d, p and q balanced with subtle organic twists in the a and s caught my eye immediately. Série A thus became Smithee—a reference to the common filmmaker pseudonym Alan Smithee. Smithee expands into a five-weight family to address a wide range of typographic needs. Filled with a bunch of alternate letters, Smithee’s industrial personality subtly shift to a more friendly tone as it gets bolder.”
