Cover for the Count of Monte Cristo. "I like illustrating literary classics. They often serve up such rich, historically interesting images to play with and they are always good literature. I'd never read a short story of Mark Twain's untill I illustrated the cover to one of his anthologies. In this piece, I liked the use of the butterfly to signify the Count's metamorphosis throughout the story. The interplay between cold iron, fragile insect and the peering human face works well for me. I found the chains in my garage."
