Paolo Pepe, creative director
Pocket Books, client
"Tolstoy's War and Peace is one of those classic novels whose cover I couldn't wait to illustrate. Both Tolstoy and his book have become such icons in their own right that I set out to create an iconic representation for the cover. The angel had a skull's face in the first pencil form but the art director thought it was a bit heavy metal. At the time I liked the skull but now realize it would not have represented Tolstoy or the story as well. The human face softened it considerably."
