"The concept for this painting was about learning to let go of the need to have control over all aspects of our lives. I used a river to symbolize life, both static and delightfully unpredictable. Since having had the personal misfortune of capsizing an eight-person raft on the Rogue River in Oregon, I have since felt that an oar was only for my personal comfort rather than a tool that could be used to change the course of where the river was taking me. The figure letting go of the oars in the picture acknowledges this lack of control over our destiny."
