"When the Wall Street Journal launched its first redesign in more than 60 years, they turned to Hoefler & Frere-Jones to solve one of their thorniest problems: how to improve the paper's signature stock listings. We undertook an ambitious research project to chronicle the complete range of small size newspaper typography. Our ‘Agate Atlas’ is a compendium of 3,800 unique examples of news agate, drawn from 129 domestic and international newspapers. "Newspapers exert a unique kind of pressure on typography. Newsprint and ink conspire to disrupt legibility and the narrow measure of the agate column requires readers' eyes and fingers to move in sometimes unfamiliar ways.
