"Carl Lewis photographed with available and strobe light in Santa Monica, California. Part of a series looking back at the stars of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as a preview for the upcoming Olympic Games in Athens. It took a little convincing at the Los Angeles Times to let me shoot 4 x 5 black-and-white film for this project. Almost everything is shot digitally now at the paper, and in color, but I knew the black and white and rough borders would serve the tone of the piece best. This was my first attempt at shooting portraits with the 4 x 5 and it took two tries at this location, with two different subjects before I got something I liked."
